So you’ve done it: you’ve made the decision to take the plunge and stand for election. Congratulations - we’re thrilled for you!

Your journey has just begun, but it doesn’t have to be without guidance or support. Drawing from key government information, political party policies, and stories from women who have stood, we’re showcasing 7 tangible steps women can take to prepare to stand.

These steps are:

  1. Registering to vote & voting

  2. Understanding politics & democracy

  3. Defining your political purpose & allegiances

  4. Deciding your goal – which sphere of government?

  5. Finding your voice – offline & online

  6. Building your team

  7. Running a campaign

Through the 7 steps we look at how gender equality in politics can become a reality. Yes, we need women to come forward, but this is simply the first step: we also need to support these women after they’ve made the choice to stand, as well as do the hard work to overcome the institutional and societal barriers that continue to hamper gender-equal politics.

Ready to dive in? Let’s look at Step #1: Registering to vote & voting.
